They’re usually confused about which tools they need to have, and which ones they can do without. (After all, if you’ve looked inside a  teds woodworking plans magazine lately, EVERY single tool is a MUST-HAVE item… even the ones that seem to have no practical purpose!)

its been rough on my pocketbook... but even on my motivation. some of hte mosty memorable bad tools i have bad over the years are : (disclaimer these are my personal opinions)

BAD TOOL #1: Delta 31-255x Drum Sander.

Delta 31-255x Drum Sander

Sure, a drum sander is not a vital tool for woodworkers. But this one sticks in my craw anyway! I felt the design was utter crap.

It wouldn’t keep alignment on the 4 lead screws. Which meant I could NEVER sand anything evenly… and everything I used it on turned out thicker on one side. The boy was it annoying.

And to top it off, the gears were plastic with a cheap rubber belt. When I saw a low quality, I just knew they weren’t going to last. And sure enough, I was right. When the belt busted, I went online to order replacement parts. (I had planned on ordering new gears because I just knew they would go next.)

That’s when I found the tool had been discontinued altogether… and you couldn’t even find parts for it. I had paid $800 for it and suddenly it was nothing but junk. A complete waste.

BAD TOOL #2: Ryobi Detail Sander

The problem I had with this tool actually surprised me. The thing was, it vibrated so much that my arm would get fatigued within 10 minutes!

Now, I’m no pansy or anything. I’ve dealt with some heavy duty machinery in my life and never had this issue. But this thing really did a number on my arm!

It was so bad that I switched back to hand-sanding and found it LESS tiring on my arm. Eventually, I sold it on eBay and got about 50% of what I paid for it. A waste of time and money.

BAD TOOL #3: Harbor Freight 6” Jointer.

No matter how much I messed with this tool, I was never able to get a true 90-degree jointed board out of it.

About the only thing I could do was make shingles with it. Eventually, I sold it on craigslist to someone locally. I told him why I was selling it, but he swore he knew how to “make it work right”.

I wished him good luck and then promptly lost hundreds by selling it for just ¼ the price I paid for it.

BAD TOOL #4: Ryobi Benchtop Table Saw

I spent more time tinkering and fixing this tool versus any other tool I’ve ever had!

I was actually glad when the angle adjustment “mechanism” broke (just a plastic rack and pinion). It lasted just one week. But it was one week of deep frustration.

The biggest problem was just overall poor design. The “throat plate” was just a rectangular piece of metal indented on one side to accommodate the 10-inch blade, so one could not make a zero clearance replacement.

And to top it off… it was noisier than ANY other benchtop saw I’ve ever used. Truly like something out of a nightmare!

It happened over and over again. And every freakin’ time I thought I knew what to look for… and what to avoid… I lost money again in a different way.

After all my experience… and after coaching hundreds of students and hearing their experiences… I’ve taken note of…

FAKE OR PAID REVIEWS

This is by far the most common scam. (I call it a scam but some might disagree. Let’s see what you think.) 

The way it works is this. Someone puts up a website called something like “Table saw reviews”. And on this webpage is a list of “the best” tools in this category. Of course what they DON’T tell you is that when you click the links on this webpage and buy the tool, the owner of the website gets a cut of the sale price.

Now, do you really think the owners of these websites care about the quality of the tools they recommend? Nope. What they do is recommend the tools with the highest revenue share.

Which means when you search for anything to do with tool reviews… you’re going to come across hundreds of these webpages… and all of them are designed to earn your trust… and take your money!

2. OLD TOOLS SOLD AS “GOOD CONDITION”

This one really gets to me. I mean it really gets me hot under the collar. Because it’s just so damned brazen! 

As though I am too blind to see the rust or too deaf to hear the squealing! This is why I never recommend buying anything from Craigslist and I rarely recommend eBay. Because you never know who you are dealing with.

Even those eBay sellers with good feedback scores may use third-party “refurbishers”… and you don’t know who those folks are. It’s just not worth the risk in my opinion.

Some might not call this a scam… but that’s exactly what it is! And the list of bad tools I gave you earlier is just the beginning.

Cheap Chinese manufacturing might be ok for Tupperware… but heavy-duty tools meant to last for years and years…?

The only reason a company would dare outsource such a thing would be to stretch profits. Parts, materials and assembly costs go down… and branding, marketing, and prices go up. It makes me sick.

And to make it worse… given the fake review situation… you can never be sure a tool is high quality or low quality… until you buy it.

BUYING TOO MUCH (QUANTITY OR PRICE)

One of the most common mistakes is buying tools that are too expensive or buying tools you don’t need. The truth is, you don’t need much to build pretty much anything you can imagine.

And you can get good quality tools for big discounts if you know where to look. (More on that later).

In all,  you can spend under $1,000 and be set up in a great workshop. But I know how it feels when you’re shopping for new tools… and you think… “why not buy the top of the line so it lasts longer”… or “may as well get the best while I’m spending money”… those kinds of thoughts won’t only get you into big trouble with your other half… it’s also COMPLETELY wrong.

6. BUYING FROM BIG BOX RETAILERS

You might be shocked by this one. I'm talking about Amazon, Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart and the like.

These places aren’t the best when it comes to stocking quality tools at cheap prices. Now I’m not saying you can’t find good stuff at these stores… you sure can… from time to time.

But I would never go to any of them as a single one-stop-shop for everything tool related.

That honor goes to a particular online store which I’m surprised more woodworkers don’t know about. More on this in a second. So there… six of the most common ways my students and I have lost money on tools. 

I bet you’ve fallen victim to at least one of these scams or mistakes before?

If not, count yourself lucky. Because one or two would be somewhat easy to avoid… but SIX?

Aweber Review : Is It Still Worth Using?

The most popular auto responder service in affiliate marketing and bulk email marketing software is Aweber. I'm in fact still a subscriber of Aweber for many years now as their reliable service made me impressed all the time.

What’s the point in using Aweber? Firstly, I will talk about myself that what got me using Aweber? It is just because all the top marketers were using and recommending it. 

Now, after many years, I still come across in my inbox and I see that the mainstream of my preferred bloggers are still using Aweber like Brian Dean and Ana Hoffman.

Aweber has been considered the slowest of the email service providers to grip the new tendency of marketing automation.

Autoresponders in Aweber was invented back in 1998 and because of this you would expect their autoresponder functionality to be incredibly good. Improbably it’s presently ‘okay’.

Plus point: The plus point of Aweber is that it is effortless to set up follow up emails that are based on time interval. For example, automatically sending subscribers an onboarding email immediately after sign up, a promo code 2 days later and a ‘follow us on social media’ email a week later is extremely easy. This is a typical use of autoresponders and it’s a breeze with Aweber.

On the down side, triggering autoresponders based on user actions and purchases is a bit more complicated than with key competitors Mailchimp and Getresponse.

Using Aweber, you can create ‘goals’ or combine automation rules with tagging to make autoresponders behave in quite funky ways…but if you want to make use of autoresponders in really advanced ways, you'll probably need to look at other products, particularly Getresponse, which provides ‘marketing automation' functionality that hooks up to a built-in CRM.

How to import data into Aweber?

A pretty straightforward affair in Aweber is importing an existing database into Aweber. You can upload the file types like XLS, XLSX, TSV, CSV, and TXT.

You can also add individual subscribers manually and the other way is to copy and paste rows of subscribers into Aweber.

Importing data: When you thought of importing your data, you are given the choice to add your subscribers to exacting set of autoresponders, and tag them.

Marketing automation

The feature that is offered all the time by email marketing solutions like Aweber is marketing automation. I judged it as ‘Autoresponders 2.0' in which you go ahead of traditional ‘drip' campaigns plus create complex user journeys using ‘IFTT' (if this, then that – style workflows).

How marketing automation works: You just need to design a flowchart with marketing automation where emails are sent based on user actions: email opens, link clicks, site visits, purchases made and so on.

Aweber Campaigns: A latest marketing automation feature recently introduced by Aweber provides this functionality of ‘Aweber Campaigns.' You can make use of certain user actions with this feature specifically opens and clickthroughs along with the application of tags just to determine what should be sent to whom and when.

Getresponse and Mailchimp are providing more flexibility when we talk about the types of user behavior that can trigger mailouts. But what I think is that this functionality needs to go a bit further really.

For those of you who are not familiar with him, Russell Brunson is a highly successful online entrepreneur. He started his first business in college (selling potato gun DVDs) and he’s sold everything from shakes, t-shirts, and supplements.

Hypothetically, the cost price of a burger is $2.00, and the selling price is only $3.00, McDonald earn $1.00 in profit. But, when they package a value meal, assuming the cost price of the fries and drink is $0.30, they earn a total of $2.70 (Selling Price $5 less Cost Price $2.30).

Here’s what McDonald did, they understood that consumers will not be satisfied with just a burger, they’ll want something to fill their stomach and drink after their meal. The fries and drink are what gives extra value to the consumers, and that’s why it is called the “Value Meal”.

Having a value ladder for your business gives you the means to provide better value to your customers (through a series of upsells) and at the same time earn a lot more money.

SECRET #3: HOW TO FIND YOUR DREAM CUSTOMERS

As the topic header suggests, this secret is all about finding your dream client.

There’s always bad customers in every business, and the reason is probably that your business is attracting the wrong type of customers.

Being clear about who your business wants to work with, will allow you to sift through and segregate good clients from bad ones.

The ultimate goal is to stop the wrong type of customers from entering your business and to get your dream client to be a raving fan of your business.

It’s easier said than done, there’s a lot of groundwork to be done.

So, the first step is to understand the concept of the congregation, meaning a group of people who have the same belief, values and ideas.

It is through this understanding that will allow you to go into the mind of your clients to extract the information you’ll need to attract them to your business. Sounds sneaky and unscrupulous, but it’s legitimate, and I am sure as a business owner, you’ll want to know how this can be done.

SECRET #4: FROM A LADDER TO A FUNNEL

This secret will explain what a sales funnel is, and how it can turn your small business into a big business.

Almost every big business in this world will have a sales funnel, you just didn’t recognize it.

A sales funnel is simply a sales process that will move your customers through a series of product offerings.

Successful businesses do this subtly, and customers will not feel that they are being sold to, instead, it makes them feel just the opposite, it makes the customer feel happy because they are receiving more value.

In this secret, Russell will walk you through the strategy, psychology and tactics you’ll need to build a sales funnel for your business.

SECRET #5: THE THREE TYPES OF TRAFFIC

Traffic basically means customers or prospects flowing through your online business (eyeballs on your business, your website, your offers).

The three types of traffic are (1) Traffic you control (2) Traffic you don’t control (3) Traffic you own.

SECRET #8: DAILY SEINFELD SEQUENCE

A Soap Opera Sequence is a sequence of emails that you send to your customers or clients through an autoresponder, and the Seinfeld emails are sent through broadcast.

The main difference is that Soap Opera emails are meant to give an introduction and build trust with your customers or clients, and Seinfeld emails are meant to draw people back to whatever that you are selling.

Russell will also share with you why he doesn’t focus on writing valuable content in his emails, but instead he gives entertainment value.

And then, he ties entertainment to his products which leads people back to his products that he is selling.

That’s how you make money, not be giving product value, but by giving entertainment value. Weird, right? But, it works. I’ve tested it myself.

SECRET #9: REVERSE ENGINEERING A SUCCESSFUL FUNNEL

Never try to reinvent the wheel!

Unless you have an unlimited amount of financial backup, you shouldn’t try to build a business that no one else has tried before.

I know, almost every entrepreneur will disagree with this statement, and it is only the smart entrepreneurs who would use this as an advantage.

Secret #9 is all about identifying and copying the businesses that are already successful (not saying that you copy them entirely (that’s violating the copyright law), but to understand the concepts and designs and mimic them).

You’ll understand the 5 variables of successful campaigns, and you’ll be guided step-by-step to reverse engineer a successful campaign.

Leveraging on other people’s success will probably get you close to, if not better results than your successful competitor.

SECRET #10: SEVEN PHASES OF A FUNNEL

I really enjoyed reading DotCom Secrets. It’s filled with a bunch of aha moments, and each time I came across one I would step back and think how I could incorporate the concept into my own businesses.
